Narrative
Fiery but aware of his years and illness, ailing filmmaker Leonard Fife (Richard Gere) wants to tell his life story unfiltered before it’s too late. As a director of acclaimed documentaries, he has much to be proud of, but his avoidance of the Vietnam War draft and past relationships hide difficult truths. Finally, determined to uncover the truth and lies in his life and career, Leonard sits down for an extended filmed interview with his former student Malcolm (Michael Imperioli), crafting heartfelt stories about his younger self (Jacob Elordi) in the 1960s and beyond. . At Leonard’s insistence, his wife and indispensable partner Emma (Uma Thurman) overhears it all. Leonard’s successes are juxtaposed with his failures – contradictions to the facts – and when the man is completely cleansed of the myth, Leonard must deal with what’s left.
